Lullaby (Oboe and Strings)

Lullaby for Oboe and Strings

Composed 2000. Duration: 6’15”

Instrumentation

solo oboe / strings (orchestra or quartet)
originally composed for SATB choir

Program Notes

Lullaby was composed in reaction to the murder of Matthew Shepard in October 1998.

The W.H. Auden text which inspired the piece is a bittersweet poem in which the ecstatic joy of newfound love is knowingly weighed against the awareness of the many ways in which the world has stacked the odds against it.

This arrangement for oboe and string orchestra was created to pair with Ballade for a concert featuring oboist Dwight Parry.
